After Curtis Axel’s big title win at Payback, classic WWE fans can’t help but remember when his father, the legendary Mr. Perfect, won his first Intercontinental Championship.

Similar to his son, Hennig had one of the greatest managers of all time by his side for his first big title win. That man was none other than Bobby The Brain Heenan. With an incredible manager by his side, there was no doubt that Mr. Perfect would be an extraordinary champion one day. On April 23, 1990, Perfect went on to win the, at the time, vacant Intercontinental Championship in the final round of a tournament against two-time Intercontinental Champion Tito Santana. Unfortunately, Perfect lost the title four months later to the Texas Tornado, however regained the championship on November 19, 1990, due to an interference by Ted DiBiase Sr.

Perfect went on to have many great matches as Intercontinental Champion such as his match at Wrestlemania VII against the Big Boss Man and of course many more. After an amazing title reign, Hennig was forced to lose his title to Bret Hart at Summerslam 1991 due to a broken tailbone and buldged discs. After his incredible title reign, not only did Hennig prove himself to be one of the greatest Intercontinental Champions of all time, but he had brought back the prestige the title had lost after it was vacated. After witnessing Mr. Perfect’s perfection, many wondered if anyone could live up to his legendary legacy.

Now, in the year 2013, history is starting to repeat itself. On June 16, 2013, Mr. Perfect’s son, Curtis Axel (Joe Hennig), won the Intercontinental Championship in a triple threat match against Wade Barrett and The Miz. Similar to his father, Axel was given an extraordinary manager to guide him to superstardom and championship gold. Paul Heyman was the right man for the job, and I expected to see a lot from the newly born team. As Payback approached, it was very exciting to see Axel win the championship, as his father had done much justice for the title. Following his championship victory, we all watched as Joe Hennig pointed to Heaven as the new Intercontinental Champion, just like his father once was. As the new champion, I hope to see Axel bring back the much deserved prestige to the Intercontinental Championship and follow in his father’s footsteps.

After all that has conspired, I am very excited to see what Vince McMahon, Paul Heyman, and of course, Curtis Axel have in store for all of us. Now, as we continue to see what Curtis Axel is capable of, we may find us asking ourselves, “Can Curtis Axel actually live up to his dad’s legendary legacy?” None of us know for sure, but there is one thing we’re sure of. We know that Mr. Perfect is without a doubt one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Intercontinental Champions of all time.

Mr. Perfect’s legacy has now been sealed within the vault.
